film food recommendations review Toronto

Someone else’s podcast

This week on our flick & feast podcast, we welcome Norm Wilner, Senior Film Writer at NOW Magazine.

Norm produces a podcast called Someone Else’s Movie (SEM) and it is one of the most interesting shows on film that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. It has just been picked up by Rogers’ Frequency Podcast Network and this is very exciting!

What we talk about

On our f&f podcast, Norm discusses SEM and why he chose a career in film (it all began with a grandfather who owned a movie theatre – it’s a great story).

He also chats about food. Although he can’t cook, he sure knows where to eat in Toronto and New York City. He has some fun film and food recommendations for us.

Norm’s ultimate film and food pairing

Jaws (1975) is one of Norm’s favourite films, so be sure to settle in for a re-watch. This classic was directed by Stephen Spielberg and stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. You can watch it on Netflix, Google Play or YouTube, but it’s really worth buying the blu-ray.

What to eat while watching the great white take on the citizens of Amity? Taste some sweet revenge sushi at Sashimi Island, 635 College Street.

At the theatre

Opening this week is Roads in February (2018), a lovely, small Canadian film directed by Katherine Jerkovic. It’s screening at TIFF Bell Lightbox starting on Friday, July 19. (Hurry! This will probably only be showing for one week.)

Roads in February is mainly set in Uruguay, so Norm thinks you should pick up some empanadas pre or post film at Segovia, 218 August Ave. or Jumbo Empanadas, 245 Augusta Ave.

Staying in?

Norm recommends Missing Link (2019), directed by Chris Butler, with Hugh Jackman, Timothy Olyphant and Zoe Saldana, among its many stars. Catch it on YouTube and Google Play and enjoy with some veggie momos from Tibet Café and Bar in Kensington Market.

I'm a Torontonian who's obsessed with pairing interesting films with fantastic food. Whether it's dining out or in, enjoying the theatre experience or streaming at home, this blog is about planning a perfect day or night, centred around food and film. Cooking, discovering new restaurants and checking out indie and international cinema make me happy. I'm a fine arts and film major and a radio and television grad with many past lives. I've had posts as a news reporter, English as a foreign language teacher and video/events producer. And then there were stints as a weather girl and singer with a band. But anyhoooo. Currently, my day job is in communications. I'm taking a #DigitalEdu course through the University of Toronto to become better at my craft. This is my first blog. Let's have some fun!
